Green Building will be the topic addressed by Jean O'Brien Gibbons at our 7pm, Tuesday, May 10, general meeting at the Gurnee Police Facility (Washington Street & O'Plaine Road). This meeting is open to the public, and everyone is invited to come learn about progress that is being made with energy efficiency and sustainable design.

The Exploring Culture interest group will go to the Kenosha Civil War Museum on Monday, May 23, to view the exhibit Bodices, Bonnets, and Weeds--Civil War & Mid-Victorian Fashions.

Sponsored by the Deerfield Area, Lake Forest-Lake Bluff, and Waukegan Area Branches of AAUW, the 6th Annual AAUW Fellows Brunch took place at Lambs Farm, Libertyville, Saturday, April 9. Members from these branches and the Elgin Area Branch numbered around 60. After a delightful meal, the audience heard from these three AAUW Fellows:

Sarah Graff, PhD, University of Chicago, Postdoctoral, Archeology, University of Chicago, who spoke about her onsite research of ancient western Syria (Ebla vicinity)

Ana Maria Reyes, PhD, Art History and Criticism, University of Chicago, who spoke about her study of 20th Century Columbian artist Beatriz Gonzalez

Amanda Fisher, MS, Mathematics, Roosevelt University (Chicago), who spoke about her plans to study and develop new classroom methods for math teachers

Raising funds for AAUW grants and fellowships is an integral part of many AAUW branches. Learning about how these monies help further the educations of outstanding women is indeed gratifying. These three women are worthy recipients. Both Graff and Reyes hope to have their work published soon.

AAUW Waukegan Area Branch members, joined by members of two chapters of Delta Gamma Nu as well as Deerfield Area and Lake Forest-Lake Bluff AAUW guests, were charmed and horified as four of the 4,000 Lost Boys of Sudan told their stories of survival during the Second Sudan Civil War and their lives in the Chicago area since being relocated to the US about 10 years ago.

The AAUW-IL, Inc., Annual Convention continues at the Lisle Hilton on Saturday, May 1. AAUW Executive Director Linda Hallman is the keynote speaker. New state bylaws will be passed, and state officers elections will be held. Click http://www.aauwil.org/ for details.

The At the Movies interest group will meet Monday, May 3, at 7pm. at the home of the hostess, to discuss The Painted Veil, a film based upon a Somerset Maugham novel.

The novel Olive Kitteridge will be discussed by the Reflections on Reading interest group 7pm, Thursday, May 6, at the home of the hostess. Suggestions for next year's books are requested.

The Exploring Culture interest group will go to the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie on Friday, May 7.

Please come to the general meeting of the Waukegan Area Branch, 7pm, Tuesday, May 11, at the Waukegan Public Library's Ray Bradbury Room. A grant from the Illinois Humanities Council brings us Sharon Alter, whose program First Ladies as Activists and Leaders should be very interesting. As usual, this general meeting is open to the public.

The branch will have a bake sale at the Lake County Courthouse on Wednesday, May 12.

The Book Review interest group will meet at 1pm, Thursday, May 20, at the home of the hostess.

Lilly Ledbetter at AAUW Convention

April 20 is Equal Pay Day, the symbolic day when women's wages catch up to men's wages from the year before. Help create awareness of this persistant gap by urging passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act.

More than 46 years after passage of the Equal Pay Act, women continue to earn only 77 cents on the dollar to their male counterparts. In this recession, women now make up half of the workforce; more and more families are relying on women's paychecks to make ends meet. Ensuring that women are paid fairly is more important than ever.

portray some of the suffragettes who spoke at the first Women's Rights Convention, held in 1850, Brinley Hall, Worchester, Massachusetts.

Today's tea was the Lake County Women's Coaltion's fifteenth and last such affair. It was attended by 120 women who belong to a dozen women's organizations in Lake County, Illinois. Proceeds from raffles will fund a scholarship for a returning woman student at the College of Lake County.

The Coalition will continue to honor women at its annual March--Women's History Month--event.

We are delighted to have Dr. Li-hua Yu, College of Lake County sociology instructor,
speaking on China’s Most Recent Economic Reforms. The meeting will be held Saturday,
September 12, at 9:30am at the Gurnee Police Facility, 1000 N. O’Plaine Road
(corner of O’Plaine & Washington). There will be a potluck brunch prior to the program.
We are hopeful that our spring 2009 scholarship recipient will attend.

The delegates to the 2009 AAUW National Convention on Saturday, June 27, forged through a three-hour business meeting to approve the AAUW Bylaws, with much of the discussion centered on membership requirements. With more than 1,400 ballots cast in a multiple-card vote, the delegates struck a proposal that would have opened membership to all who support AAUW’s mission and voted to insert passages from the 2007 Association Bylaws that extend membership to individuals based on their educational degrees.

In other business, the delegates passed motions to increase the number of directors-at-large from seven to 10, while the number of appointed officers and directors will drop from six to three.

The new bylaws will go into effect on July 1, 2009. The amended board composition will go into effect for the 2011–13 biennium.

The delegates also passed the “one member, one vote” proposal, which provides every member the right and opportunity to have a personal voice in directing the future of AAUW and our important work to break through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance.

The delegates were so focused on their work that, when asked if they wanted to take a two-minute break, they opted to continue with the business at hand.

Next, they approved the bylaws of the AAUW Action Fund. The purpose of the fund is to support and advocate for legislation, policies, and procedures related to women’s equity and education.

The delegates also approved the related proposed amendments to the Massachusetts Charter of AAUW. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Bylaws Committee members received a rousing round of applause for their hard work for more than a year

AAUW Member-Get-a-Member campaign grand prizes are based on the number of members recruited by individuals, branches, and states from June 16, 2008, to June 15, 2009. All members who recruited at least one new paid member in year two of the campaign will be entered in a drawing to win $1,000. The drawing will be held on Sunday.

Laurie Pina, of the AAUW Rockland County (NY) Branch, is the individual who recruited the most new members, 19.

The AAUW Poughkeepsie (NY) Branch recruited the most new members for a
branch, 56.

The AAUW Bedford County (VA) Branch recruited the highest percentage
of new members for a branch, 48.5 percent.

California recruited the most new members for a state, 432.

Utah recruited the highest percentage of new members for a state, 10 percent.

Women Warriors Ready to Break through Barriers

AAUW’s 2009 National Convention opening session started out on a high note on Friday with a video welcome message from White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett. Jarrett extended a special greeting from President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama and applauded AAUW’s commitment to gender equity, work-life balance, and education.

St. Louis Comptroller Darlene Green welcomed AAUW delegates to the Gateway City, followed by warm messages from AAUW Executive Director Linda D. Hallman and AAUW President Ruth Sweetser. After a brief introduction from AAUW Public Policy Director Lisa Maatz, Lilly Ledbetter took the stage to a standing ovation.

Ledbetter spoke about growing up in Alabama, working hard, raising a family, and playing by the rules. “I held up my end of the bargain, but my employer, Goodyear, did not,” she said. After 19 years at Goodyear, she found out that she had been underpaid for virtually her entire career. She filed suit with the EEOC, and her case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In January 2009, Ledbetter was vindicated when she stood in the East Room of the White House as President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Our work is not over, however, and AAUW is leading the charge on the Paycheck Fairness Act, which has passed in the House but not yet in the Senate.

Ledbetter said, “I recently spoke to 130 fourth graders. During my presentation, a little girl raised her hand and asked me, ‘How did you feel when you found out the men were paid more?’ Now, if fourth graders get it, what is going on with the Senate?” The session ended with a call to action from Lisa Maatz, who urged all members to engage in an act of “polite civil disobedience” and flood senators’ e-mail and voice mail until they sign on to this landmark bill. Senators, beware!

She-E-O Forum
The energy and excitement continued on Saturday afternoon as the She-E-O Forum brought together speakers Erika Feinberg, CEO of ActiveForever, and Arlene Harris, chair of the board of GreatCall, provider of the Jitterbug phone and cellular service, to share their perspectives on the challenges women face while working in male-dominated industries.

AAUW Director of Corporate Partnerships and panel moderator Cordy Galligan began the session by noting that, in 2009, women make up more than half the U.S. labor force, but there are only 13 women CEOs in Fortune 500 companies. In Fortune 1,000 companies, only 25 women hold that position.

Harris began the session by crediting her upbringing and early exposure to the technology field as important influences in helping her become an entrepreneur. When asked why so few women are entering the STEM fields, Harris noted that “the fields are hard, a lot of work, and you must stay focused. Most of us don’t have time to do all the things we want to do.” She says her greatest challenge as a woman in the high tech industry is financing. An attitude she often faces is, “Who wants to finance a woman?”

Feinberg discussed the paradox of how few women there are in Internet merchandising despite our buying power and talked about the differences between store shopping (“emotional”) and online shopping (“less distracting”). Feinberg spoke of the hurdles that she has faced, especially in becoming a CEO at age 25 and learning to be successful in a maledominated field.

“Did you know…?” the 2009 AAUW National Convention delegates were asked, as they watched a Sony video about rapid global changes in education and technology. This video set the stage for AAUW President Ruth Sweetser’s opening remarks at Saturday morning’s Breaking through Barriers plenary before a crowd of nearly a thousand attendees. “The work we do is significant and powerful,” Sweetser said, as she outlined AAUW’s achievements of the past year.

Educational Foundation President Barbara O’Connor continued the theme, reporting that AAUW awarded $4.4 million in fellowships and grants in FY09.

Guest speaker Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) took the stage to a standing ovation and gave a rousing, motivational speech. “I am humbled to be here today,” she said. “I’m a true believer in the work of AAUW. You are the pioneers, and we (members of Congress) stand on your shoulders so that we do the right thing.”

DeLauro lauded AAUW members for their tireless advocacy in building support in Congress for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. But, she declared, we must continue to urge the Senate to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. “Do not underestimate the power of big ideas,” she told the audience. “As I look around this AAUW convention, I feel we can do it.”

DeLauro also spoke about the power of constituent advocacy, noting that members of Congress think about their chances for reelection whenever they hear from their constituents. DeLauro closed her speech with a quote from her mother: “Come on girls; let’s make ourselves heard!”

After the speech, the business meeting resumed with the report of the credentials committee, which reported a total convention attendance of 973. Delegates then adopted the convention rules, the convention program, the minutes, and the nominating committee report before hearing speeches by the candidates for AAUW elected office. Gail Nordmoe was elected AAUW vice president by acclamation. The meeting ended with a reading of the election rules.

The AAUW National Convention banquet, held Saturday night, broughtmembers together to celebrate the generosity of the AAUW community and to be inspired by powerful women making a difference in the lives of others. The program began with an introduction by AAUW President Ruth Sweetser.

Jennifer Wilken, AAUW Educational Foundation vice president of development, honored the states and branches that raised the most money for AAUW in FY09 and recognized the many new fellowships and grants funds established this year.

Florine Swanson, chair of the Major Gifts Committee, announced the public phase of the Major Gifts Campaign. The committee has already raised more than $450,000 and hopes to raise $1 million by the end of 2010.

Wanda P. Hardy, founder and president of Credit Worthy, Inc., received the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund Award. Hardy has dedicated herself to making sure that all people have the knowledge they need to make sound financial choices. She encouraged attendees to continue reaching out to help other women, especially in these difficult economic times.

Keynote speaker and AAUW member Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) closed out the evening with a message of determination in the face of adversity. A longtime advocate for women, Speier is well known for her California legislation protecting the rights of consumers from credit companies. Plan to join AAUW and CARE (one of the largest relief and humanitarian organizations in the world) and more than 120,000 people in 400 theaters across the US to celebrate International Women's Day on Thursday, March 5. CARE is hosting a one-night event featuring the theatrical premiere of A Powerful Noise, an acclaimed documentary that follows three extraordinary women in Vietnam, Bosnia, and Mali. These women are each overcoming gender barriers and rising up to claim a voice in their societies by fighting AIDS, rebuilding communities, and educating girls. AAUW Gains Special Consultative Status with U.N. Council
WASHINGTON – AAUW has gained special consultative status at the United Nations with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which initiates reports, makes recommendations, and promotes respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

For many years, AAUW has had a U.N. representative attending select meetings and monitoring issues affecting women and girls. The new designation allows AAUW to participate in international conferences, sign on to NGO statements, and share AAUW’s expertise.

“We closely follow a variety of international issues ranging from girls’ education to women’s economic security to human rights to women in peacekeeping,” said AAUW Executive Director Linda D. Hallman, CAE. “This new status will strengthen AAUW’s presence globally and provide us with greater opportunities to engage in U.N.-related activities and initiatives that break through barriers for women and girls.”

AAUW has a proud history in global affairs that includes awarding more than 2,200 international fellowships to women from more than 130 countries and partnering with leading international humanitarian organizations on initiatives to empower women.
Next year, AAUW will actively advocate for women at the 53rd session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, which will focus on the equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS.

“AAUW can now advocate more effectively and support policies aimed at strengthening gender equality, especially in the areas of the economic, social, political, and reproductive health rights of women and girls,” said Carolyn Donovan, AAUW’s U.N. representative.
Currently, AAUW is encouraging its branches to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10 and to continue supporting ratification of the women’s rights treaty—the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

“AAUW members have long supported our efforts, from hosting international visitors to initiating forums and symposia on global issues pertinent to women and girls,” said Gloria L. Blackwell, AAUW’s director of fellowships, grants, and international programs. “We are thrilled that our role is expanding.”

Interest Groups

The Waukegan Area Branch has six active interest groups at this time. The number of groups can fluctuate, depending upon the interests and enthusiasm of branch members. Most interest groups meet monthly, usually at a member’s home. Specifics are reported in the branch’s monthly newsletter. Refreshments and socializing are implied at these gatherings.

AT THE MOVIES: If you like films, especially those that highlight a female element, this is the group for you. Members decide which movies to watch--separately or in small groups--and then have lively discussions.

BABY HATS WITH LOVE: In this relatively new, yet well-received community outreach project, branch members knit/crochet hats for newborns at Waukegan’s Vista Health/Victory Memorial Hospital.

BOOK REVIEW: Branch members or invited reviewers enthusiastically present their interpretations of books of their choosing, encouraging the group to continue their love of reading.

EXPLORING CULTURE: Field trips to local venues, ranging from art to history to nature and more, are the focus of this group. Destinations are normally within an hour of Waukegan, but some overnight adventures have taken place.

REFLECTIONS ON READING: With so many new books appearing annually, how do the members of this group decide what to read? You’ll have to attend one of the meetings to learn that...and perhaps you’ll have a suggestion of your own.

TRAVELOGUE: Whether you travel or just have an interest in the wider world, hearing tales and seeing photos/slides/videos of the highs and lows of the presenter’s journey will be interesting and perhaps inspirational.

Event Descriptions

GENERAL MEETINGS: Held monthly, September through June, branch general meetings are open to the everyone. Invited speakers address topics such as education, current events/politics, women’s issues, the environment, and the local community. At each event, socializing and networking take place during refreshments.

BOARD MEETINGS: Required for elected branch officers and suggested for committee chairs, these meetings--open to the membership--are where most of the branch’s business and planning takes place.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE: As one of the 14 AAUW-IL, Inc., District 5 branches, the Waukegan Area Branch participates with District 4 branches in an annual fall conference. Attendees learn “what’s happening” at state and national levels of AAUW.

LUNCHEON & SILENT AUCTION: Twice a year this branch has luncheons at restaurants, and the program is a fund-raising silent auction. Guests are most welcome!

NETWORKING LUNCHEON: No business is conducted at this networking event...just a delightful lunch, an opportunity to share ideas with like-minded women, and a chance to hear an outstanding speaker.

EF FELLOWS BRUNCH: Members who attend this function have the pleasure of hearing from recipients of Education Foundation fellowships and grants, learning how AAUW funding has positively changed these women by allowing them to further their educations and research.

STATE CONVENTION: All AAUW members are encouraged to attend this annual two-day event that includes workshops, speakers, business sessions, distributions of awards, election of state officers, and lots of opportunities for networking.

AAUW CONVENTION: Held biannually over several days, the Association Convention is an outstanding assembly of members from all over the country. Nationally known speakers alone make the event worthwhile, but it is also here that AAUW business is conducted by members.

About Our Branch

History

THE ASSOCIATION
The American Association of University Women begain in 1881 with 15 college alumnae. Today’s membership is approximately 100,000.

With more than 1,000 branches and 500 college and university partners, AAUW members across the country contribute to a more promising future for women and girls.

Today’s AAUW focuses on Pay Equity, Retirement Security, Gender Equity, Financial Literacy, and Social Justice. AAUW is a catalyst for positive change.

EF–The Educational Foundation provides grants and fellowships to support educational
and professional development for women at the post-graduate level.

LAF–The Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education.

WAUKEGAN AREA BRANCH
This branch, founded in 1928, presently boasts more than 80 members from northeastern Lake County, Illinois, including the communities of Antioch, Beach Park, Grayslake, Green Oaks, Gurnee, Lake Forest, Lake Villa, Libertyville, Lindenhurst, Wadsworth, Winthrop Harbor, Zion, and, of course, Waukegan.

Active at local, state, and national levels of AAUW, the Waukegan Area Branch is especially proud of these recent accomplishments:
(1) The Waukegan Area AAUW 75th Anniversary Research & Projects Grant (graduate level, administered nationally)
(2) The Waukegan Area Branch Local Scholarship (college-bound high school student, administered locally)

In addition to cooperating with neighboring AAUW branches on several functions each year, the Waukegan Area Branch partners with local libraries in sponsorship of programs, with The Lake County League of Women Voters on candidate forums, and with the Lake County Health Department on two programs: The Kids First Health Fair and The Real Deal: Life 101.
