DECEMBER 2021

 As we look forward to the holidays, the Waukegan Area Branch of AAUW wishes everyone Good Tidings!

  • The Reflections on Reading interest group discusses Jodi Picoult's novel The Storyteller at 1pm, Wednesday, December 1 via Zoom.
  •  The branch board meets via Zoom at 7pm, Thursday, December 9.
  • We are excited to be together again - in person - at the Chocolate Sanctuary in Gurnee for lunch on Saturday, December 11!  There will be a quilt raffle (to benefit the AAUW Greatest Needs Fund) and a 50/50 raffle (to benefit our local scholarship).  Welcome back to our holiday luncheon!
  • The At the Movies interest group will meet on Zoom, Monday, December 13, at 1pm.  This will be a retrospective of Frances McDormand movies.

NOVEMBER 2021

  •  The Reflections on Reading interest group meets via Zoom at 1pm, Wednesday, November 3, to discuss Jean Harper's novel The Dry.
  • The movie Invictus will be discussed by the At the Movies interest group at 1pm, Monday, November 8, via Zoom. 
  • This month's branch general meeting will be held via Zoom at 7pm, Tuesday, November 16. Our speaker, Gail Goolsby, will talk about her book Unveiled Truths: Lessons I Learned Leading the International School of Kabul.

OCTOBER 2021

 

  • The Diary of a Bookseller, by Shaun Bythell, will be discussed by the Reflections on Reading interest group 1pm, Wednesday, October 6, at Heather Ridge.
  • The At the Movies interest group will discuss The White Crow (2018) at Heather Ridge Monday, October 11, at 1pm. 
  • The WAB general meeting will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, October 12, at 7pm with the Deerfield Area Branch.  Dr. Ilene Berns-Zare will speak about Flourishing at Midlife and Beyond: Reinvigorating Our Lives During Transitions and Challenges. 
  • The branch book exchange (GOGO) will take place the afternoon of Wednesday, October 13, on the driveway of a member.
  • The branch board will meet 7pm, Thursday, October 28, via Zoom.
  •  AAUW-Il, Inc., will hold a conference via Zoom Saturday, October 30, from 10am to 1pm.  Check the state website for details.

SEPTEMBER 2021

  •  The Reflections on Reading interest group will meet on Wednesday, September 1, at 1pm, near the Stoney Brook Clubhouse in Heather Ridge.  The book selection is A Well-Behaved Woman: A Novel of the Vanderbilts by Therese Anne Fowler.
  • Welcome back to WAB general meetings!  The Saturday, September 11, meeting will be held at 10am via Zoom.  The topic is Roberti Community House: Ten Years of Impact
  •  The At the Movies interest group will meet at 1pm, on Monday, September 13, near the Stoney Brook Clubhouse in Heather Ridge for a discussion of Lee Daniels' The Butler
  •  GOGO (the branch book exchange) will take place the afternoon of Wednesday, September 15, on a member's driveway.
  • The branch board will meet via Zoom at 7pm on Thursday, September 23
  • The Travelogue interest group will meet on Tuesday, September 28, at 1pm, at a member's home.  Photos of a trip to the Amazon will be presented.

AUGUST 2021

 The branch book exchange will take place from 1pm to 4pm - 15-minute increments - on Wednesday, August 18, on a member's driveway.

The Waukegan Area Branch of AAUW is planning for autumn meetings and deciding where/how they will be held.

JULY 2021

  •  The Reflections on Reading interest group will meet outside at Bowen Park Area C at 1pm on Wednesday, July 7.  Each member should bring a lawn chair.  The book to be discussed is Nora Ephron's  I Feel Bad About My Neck.  (This will be the first time this group has met in person in more than a year.)
  • GOGO - Give One, Get One - the branch book exchange will gather on a member's driveway on Wednesday, July 21.  Since many books have been accumulated, it is not necessary to bring a book in order to take one. 
  • The summer board meeting will be held at a member's home on Thursday, July 22.  A 6:00pm potluck will be followed by a 7:00pm meeting.

  • The Reflections on Reading interest group will meet at 1pm on Wednesday, June 2, via Zoom, to discuss Isabel Wilkerson's book Caste
  • The branch book exchange (GOGO) will meet in person - on a member's driveway - by appointment (15-minute slots) on Wednesday, June 16.

MAY 2021

 
  •  On Wednesday, May 5, at 1pm, the Reflections on Reading interest group will meet via Zoom to discuss Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah.
  • The At the Movies interest group will meet via Zoom on Monday, May 10, at 7pm.  The film to be discussed is Misbehaviour, which stars Keira Knightley and Greg Kinnear. 
  • The topic of this month's general meeting is Creating Communities for a Better Future.  Denita Robinson of Lake County United will talk about two local affordable housing developments at 7pm, Tuesday, May 11, via Zoom. 
  • GOGO, the branch "give one, get one" book exchange, resumes  May 19 on a member's driveway by appointment only, masked and at a distance. 
  • The Travelogue interest group will have an outdoor potluck and (distanced, masked) indoor presentation about the Florida Keys and Everglades at noon, Tuesday, May 25
  • The branch board will meet at 7pm, Thursday, May 27, via Zoom.

APRIL 2021

  •  The Reflections on Reading interest group will meet at 1pm, Wednesday, April 7, via Zoom to discuss Michele Obama's book Becoming.
  • The movie Trumbo will be discussed at the 1pm, Monday, April 12, Zoom meeting of the At the Movies interest group.
  • This month's WAB general meeting will be the AAUW-IL District 5 14th Annual Fellows Presentation.  We will join other branches in hearing four outstanding Fellows and Grantees will talk about their projects.  This will take place virtually (via Zoom) at 1pm, Saturday, April 17
  • The branch board will meet via Zoom on Thursday, April 22, at 7pm. 
  • It's time for the state convention!  AAUW-IL, Inc., is pleased to present the following speakers via Zoom on April 23 & 24:  Michelle Duster, great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells; Gloria Blackwell, AAUW vice president for Programs and Advancement; Kimberly Stratton, engineer who will focus on STEM; and Dr. Gretchen Goldman, whose topic is "The Impact of the Pandemic on Women."

MARCH 2021

 
  • The Reflections on Reading interest group will meet via Zoom on Wednesday, March 3, at 1pm, to discuss Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope by Nicholas B. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.
  • WAB is a founding member of the Lake County Women's Coalition, which will have its annual Women's History Month event virtually at 10am on Saturday, March 6.  This year's theme is "Women Rising: Educate, Enlighten, Empower."  Proceeds will benefit a local scholarship.  Although there is no charge, registration is required to obtain the link.  www.lakecountywomen.org .
  • The Zoom meeting of the At the Movies interest group will be held Monday, March 8, at 1pm.  The film Red Joan will be discussed. 
  • State Senator Adrian Johnson will be the speaker at the WAB general meeting to be held virtually at 7pm, Tuesday, March 16.
  • The branch board will meet via Zoom at 7pm, Thursday, March 25.

FEBRUARY 2021

 

  • The Reflections on Reading interest group will meet via Zoom on Wednesday, February 3, at 1pm.  Susan Orlean's book The Library Book - the story of the 1986 Los Angeles Public Library fire as well as a chronicle of libraries and books through the ages - will be discussed.
  • The film Harriet will be discussed by the At the Movies interest group at 1pm, Monday, February 8, via Zoom. 
  • Our speaker for our Tuesday, February 9, 7pm Zoom general meeting will be Rita Mayfield, who has represented District 60 in the Illinois House of Representatives since 2010 and who is currently a WAB member.  Mayfield can provide insight into current legislation, the transition to a new Speaker of the House, and other hot topics. 
  • The branch board will have a Zoom meeting at 7pm, on Thursday, February 25

JANUARY 2021

 HAPPY 2021!

     This wonderful quilt was made last year by one of our members.  Let's hope it has become obsolete. 

  • Our At the Movies interest group will discuss Dark Waters (2019) at 1pm on Monday, January 11, via Zoom. 
  • The General Meeting this month will be held on Tuesday, January 12, at 7pm, via Zoom.  The topic is The Electoral College, and the presenter is Joyce Williams, a founding member of the League of Women Voters of Illinois' Electoral College Committee.
  • The branch board will meet via Zoom at 7pm, Thursday, January 21.
