HAPPY 130TH BIRTHDAY, AAUW!



  • Bob Greene's book Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen will be discussed by the Reflections on Reading interest group at 7pm, Thursday, November 3, at the home of the hostess.


  • Fair Game (2010), based on the autobiography of CIA undercover operative Valerie Plame, will be discussed by the At the Movies interest group at 7pm, Monday, November 7, at the home of the hostess.


  • The 7pm, Tuesday, November 8, general meeting will highlight local community social services: Holy Family Food Pantry, Northern Illinois Food Bank, and Avon Township Community Foundation. Open to the public, the meeting will be held at the Gurnee Police Facility community room.


  • The Book Review interest group will meet at 1pm, Thursday, November 17, at the home of the hostess.

  • The At the Movies interest group will meet on Monday, October 3, at the home of the hostess, to discuss the Chinese (Mandarin) film Together (2002) about a talented young violinist.

  • The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peal Pie Society (Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows) will be discussed by the Reflections on Reading interest group at 7pm, Thursday, October 6, at the home of the hostess.

  • Mike Adams, senior biologist at the Lake County Health Department, will address current environmental issues and Lake Michigan water quality at the branch's general meeting, 7pm, Tuesday, October 11. We will meet at the Waukegan Field House Sports & Fitness Facility, corner of Grand & Baldwin.

  • The Story of a Beautiful Girl will be the topic at the 1pm, Thursday, October 20, meeting of the Book Review interest group at the home of the hostess.

  • Cutting for Stone (Abraham Verghese) will be discussed by the Reflections on Reading interest group at 7pm, Thursday, September 8, at the home of the hostess.


  • Mary Clare Jakes, president of the Waukegan Main Street organization, will speak about the Artspace development in the former Karcher Hotel. Come learn about this exciting project at the general meeting and potluck brunch, to be held at 9:30am, Saturday, September 10, at the Gurnee Police Facility (Washington & O'Plaine). All Waukegan Area Branch general meetings are open to the public.

  • Summer Hours (French, 2008) will be discussed by the At the Movies interest group at 7pm, Monday, May 2, at the home of the hostess.

  • The Reflections on Reading interest group will meet at 1pm, Thursday, May 5, at the home of the hostess, to discuss Lake Effect: Two Sisters and a Town's Toxic Legacy. Author Nancy Nichols grew up in Waukegan, the town refered to in the title of the book.

  • Green Building will be the topic addressed by Jean O'Brien Gibbons at our 7pm, Tuesday, May 10, general meeting at the Gurnee Police Facility (Washington Street & O'Plaine Road). This meeting is open to the public, and everyone is invited to come learn about progress that is being made with energy efficiency and sustainable design.

  • The Book Review interest group will meet at 1pm, Thursday, May 19, at the home of the hostess.

  • The Exploring Culture interest group will go to the Kenosha Civil War Museum on Monday, May 23, to view the exhibit Bodices, Bonnets, and Weeds--Civil War & Mid-Victorian Fashions.

  • A member's trip to Holland & Belgium will be revisited after the Travelogue interest group's annual pot luck supper at 6pm, Tuesday, May 24, at the home of the hostess.

  • The branch board will meet on Thursday, May 26, at 7pm, at the home of the hostess.

AAUW FELLOWS BRUNCH

Sponsored by the Deerfield Area, Lake Forest-Lake Bluff, and Waukegan Area Branches of AAUW, the 6th Annual AAUW Fellows Brunch took place at Lambs Farm, Libertyville, Saturday, April 9. Members from these branches and the Elgin Area Branch numbered around 60. After a delightful meal, the audience heard from these three AAUW Fellows:


Sarah Graff, PhD, University of Chicago, Postdoctoral, Archeology, University of Chicago, who spoke about her onsite research of ancient western Syria (Ebla vicinity)


Ana Maria Reyes, PhD, Art History and Criticism, University of Chicago, who spoke about her study of 20th Century Columbian artist Beatriz Gonzalez


Amanda Fisher, MS, Mathematics, Roosevelt University (Chicago), who spoke about her plans to study and develop new classroom methods for math teachers


Raising funds for AAUW grants and fellowships is an integral part of many AAUW branches. Learning about how these monies help further the educations of outstanding women is indeed gratifying. These three women are worthy recipients. Both Graff and Reyes hope to have their work published soon.

    The Secret World of Civil War Women Spies will be presented by Shannon Ferguson-Munns at our 7pm, Tuesday, April 12, general meeting at Cook Memorial Library, Libertyville. This meeting is free and open to the public.


    The Waukegan Area Branch of AAUW will hold a bake sale at the Lake County Courthouse, Wednesday morning, April 13. Profits will support AAUW Funds.


    The Book Review interest group will meet at 1pm, Thursday, April 21, at the home of the hostess.


    Travel in Alaska will be the topic at the Travelogue interest group meeting, 7pm, Tuesday, April 26, at the home of the hostess.

    Lost Boys of Sudan

    AAUW Waukegan Area Branch members, joined by members of two chapters of Delta Gamma Nu as well as Deerfield Area and Lake Forest-Lake Bluff AAUW guests, were charmed and horified as four of the 4,000 Lost Boys of Sudan told their stories of survival during the Second Sudan Civil War and their lives in the Chicago area since being relocated to the US about 10 years ago.

Church Street, Libertyville. This meeting is co-sponsored by the AAUW Deerfield Area Branch and two chapters of Delta Kappa Gamma. The presentation will take place after a 9:30am potluck brunch.     • Detective Tom Granger--Criminal Investigations Division of the Waukegan Police Department--will talk about Identity Theft at the 7pm, Tuesday, February 8, general meeting. The meeting will be held at the Waukegan Public Library's Ray Bradbury Room and is open to the public.

    • Due to inclement weather, the Reflections on Reading discussion of Half Broke Horses: A True-Life Novel (Jeannette Walls) has been rescheduled to 7pm, Thursday, February 10, at the home of the hostess.

    • The Book Review interest group will get together at 1pm, Thursday, February 17, at the home of the hostess.

    • The Galapagos Islands will be the program at the 7pm, Tuesday, February 22, meeting of the Travelogue interest group at the home of the hostess.

    Ten members of the Waukegan Area Branch of AAUW were among the 90 attending this annual event on Saturday, January 22, at the Deerfield Hyatt.





    The speaker was WBBM's Kris Kridel. An award-winning anchor/reporter, Kridel teaches broadcast journalism at Loyola University.

    Many of the local branch groups take a break at this time of year, but our calendar will be full again beginning in February. Meanwhile, here is a bit of what's going on this month:
    • The Book Review interest group will meet at 1pm on Thursday, January 20, at the home of the hostess.

    • WBBM News Co-Anchor Kris Krydel will speak about "Old Media, New Media, and Somewhere in Between" at the 28th Annual AAUW-IL District 5 Networking Luncheon. The event will be held at 11:30am, Saturday, January 22, at the Deerfield Hyatt (1750 Lake Cook Road, Deerfield, Illinois). The cost of lunch is $35 and includes a choice of entree.
